Darth Vader lightsabre from iconic Star Wars duel heads to auction

The Guardian ·

Darth Vader's lightsabre from the iconic "I am your father" scene is heading to auction at Heritage Auctions next month, with an estimated value of at least $1 million. The prop, also used in Return of the Jedi, represents one of cinema's most memorable moments and anchors a substantial collection of Star Wars memorabilia being sold.

The auction features more than two dozen lightsabres spanning the entire Star Wars saga, with other notable items including duelling lightsabres from Revenge of the Sith (estimated at $10,000 apiece), Boba Fett's EE-3 carbine blaster ($100,000-plus), a Yoda puppet hand and Anthony Daniels' original 1977 screenplay. The sale follows a comparable Luke Skywalker lightsabre with severed hand that fetched a record $3.75m in July.

Star Wars is a science fiction film series that began in the 1970s. One of its most famous moments comes in The Empire Strikes Back, when the villain Darth Vader reveals to the hero Luke Skywalker that he is his father.

The lightsabre is the laser sword weapon that Darth Vader uses in this scene and other films. Props and costumes from major films can be valuable to collectors, particularly when connected to memorable moments.

Star Wars memorabilia has proven highly collectible over the decades. A lightsabre prop from another Star Wars film sold at auction for $3.75 million earlier this year, showing the value collectors place on authentic items from the franchise.
