Coroner finds heart rhythm abnormalities caused Elena Moore’s death

Daily Mail ·

Elena Moore, a 39-year-old South Carolina personal trainer, died from cardiac dysrhythmias and premature ventricular contractions, according to findings released four months after her June disappearance. Her body was discovered in woodland five days after she vanished from a Planet Fitness gym in Lexington. The case attracted significant media attention, though the coroner noted it received disproportionate coverage partly because Moore was considered conventionally attractive and was married to a former police officer.

Moore was experiencing an acute mental health crisis at the time of her disappearance, having been involuntarily committed on 5 June but the facility failed to provide her prescribed heart medication during her stay. When released on 11 June, she was placed in a taxi reportedly directed to her home but instead taken to a CVS pharmacy. A toxicology report found alcohol in her system but no other substances or signs of physical trauma. Moore had a documented medical history including heart palpitations, anxiety, PTSD, ADHD and excessive alcohol use.

  • Coroner noted case gained attention partly due to victim's appearance and ex-cop spouse.

Elena Moore was a 39-year-old personal trainer from South Carolina who disappeared from a gym in June and was discovered dead in woodland five days later. A coroner's investigation, completed months later, has now explained the cause of her death.

At the time of her disappearance, Moore was experiencing a mental health crisis and had been admitted to a mental health facility where she was not given her prescribed heart medication. When she was released, she was placed in a taxi intended to take her home, but instead it went to a pharmacy.

Moore had a documented history of heart problems and other health conditions. The coroner's investigation determined that she died from an irregular heart rhythm caused by her existing heart condition, rather than from injury or external causes.
