Primary school girl, 10, and stepmother, 36, identified after car plunged into a dam and her father tried to save them
A ten-year-old primary school girl and her 36-year-old stepmother died after their car plunged into a dam in rural Queensland on Thursday. The blue Subaru veered off Springvale Road in Tinana South, smashed through a fence and sank into the water on a neighbouring property. Despite rescue efforts, both were pronounced dead.
The pair were on their way to collect other children from school when the car veered off the road just before 5:30pm. Arliyah's father discovered the vehicle upside down in the dam after the school contacted him about the delayed pickup, prompting nearby farmer Joel Hinschen to wade into neck-high water and pull both passengers from the vehicle. The father reportedly began CPR on his daughter before firefighters arrived. Queensland Police's Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the circumstances, including whether speed or driver inattention contributed to the crash.
