King Charles warns automation is fuelling cyber threats and disinformation

BBC Technology ·

King Charles III has written to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) on its 10th anniversary, warning that malicious actors are evolving their tactics through automated technologies to conduct disinformation campaigns and hostile online activity. He emphasised that strong cyber security is fundamental for protecting trust, democratic institutions and the critical infrastructure upon which daily life depends.

The letter came weeks after the King urged AI executives about the "existential dangers" of advanced AI falling into the wrong hands and being misused in "potentially catastrophic ways". His warnings coincide with a high-profile breach at online retailer Asos, where hackers accessed detailed personal data on potentially millions of users, including names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and dates of birth.

Cyber attacks involve malicious individuals or groups stealing data, disrupting systems or spreading false information online. These threats can target anyone, from individual people to major corporations and government agencies.

Modern technology is making such attacks more effective by automating them, allowing hackers to reach vast numbers of people simultaneously and conduct campaigns with unprecedented speed and scale. Automated systems and artificial intelligence enable attackers to steal sensitive information, damage critical services and spread disinformation far more efficiently than previous methods.

Recent major breaches have shown how quickly hackers can access millions of people's personal details, including names, addresses and contact information. These incidents have prompted growing concern about how cyber attacks undermine public confidence, compromise individuals' security and disrupt the critical infrastructure that modern society depends on.
