Google unveils Fitbit Edge with advanced health sensors and limited smartwatch features

Ars Technica ·

Google has announced the Fitbit Edge, a new health tracker positioned between the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 5. It offers more sensors and a larger screen than the Air, while costing about half as much as the Pixel Watch 5, but it lacks many smartwatch features.

The Edge has a 1.34-inch OLED display, on-device GPS, ECG and blood oxygen sensors, and a battery life of up to seven days with the always-on display off. It works with Android phones and iPhones, but cannot install apps, make contactless payments or use Gemini directly; Health Coach AI features require a subscription after the included three-month Premium period. The standard model costs $180, with a $220 Stephen Curry edition, and shipping is due to begin on 27 October.

Fitbit is a brand owned by Google that makes health-tracking wearable devices. The company has released a new model called the Fitbit Edge that sits between its simpler and more advanced product options.

The Fitbit Edge is positioned between simpler health trackers and full smartwatches. It tracks important health metrics but lacks smartwatch functions like app installation, contactless payments, and some AI features.

Different health-tracking devices appeal to different people depending on their needs and budgets. Such mid-range options are becoming increasingly common in the wearable device market as consumers seek different balances between capability and cost.
