Putin ignores Trump’s ‘energy ceasefire’ with fresh attacks cutting power in Kyiv – as Zelensky blasts ‘absolutely unjust’ lack of warning from allies

Daily Mail ·

Russian attacks killed at least six people in Ukraine and caused power cuts across parts of Kyiv, with energy facilities and residential buildings hit. The strikes matter because Ukraine depends on Western intelligence to warn of incoming attacks, and President Volodymyr Zelensky said allies had given no advance warning before a previous strike on a Kyiv power plant.

In Kyiv, three people were killed in separate attacks, while strikes in Dnipropetrovsk killed two and wounded six, and one person died in Zaporizhzhia. Emergency power cuts affected several city districts, with some eastern areas also losing water; attacks were reported in other Ukrainian regions, while Russian officials said a Ukrainian drone strike killed one person in Balakovo and air defences downed hundreds of drones.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the war has repeatedly damaged power stations and other infrastructure. Kyiv is Ukraine’s capital, while Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia are regions elsewhere in the country.

Ukraine relies on support from Western allies, including intelligence that can help it prepare for Russian attacks. Volodymyr Zelensky is Ukraine’s president; Donald Trump is the US president, whose proposal for an energy ceasefire concerns attacks on energy infrastructure.

Power cuts can disrupt heating, water and daily life, as well as affect hospitals and other essential services. Disagreements over warning and support from allies matter because Ukraine depends on that assistance to protect its people and infrastructure.
