Ian McKellen set to perform as a hologram in new play
Sir Ian McKellen will appear as a 3D hologram in the European premiere of *An Ark* at Manchester’s Factory International Aviva Studios. The production uses holographic performances to explore a different way of acting and presenting theatre.
McKellen and Golda Rosheuvel were filmed from multiple angles using 52 cameras to create the holograms. Arinze Kene and Rosie Sheehy complete the cast; the play, written by Simon Stephens, runs from 27 March to 10 April after debuting in New York.

A hologram is a three-dimensional image that can appear on stage without the performer being physically present. In theatre, this lets a production combine recorded performances with live acting and explore how digital images change the experience of watching a play.
An Ark is a play by British writer Simon Stephens, first staged in New York. Its Manchester production brings together holographic appearances by Ian McKellen and Golda Rosheuvel with live performances by Arinze Kene and Rosie Sheehy.
