Welcome to the lovely landlocked land of Luxembork, where the fares are free, and the terminals are techno

The Register ·

An otherwise little-used transport terminal in Luxembourg has been cycling through colourful screen tests at a railway station, catching passengers’ attention. The incident appears to be a technical fault: the display repeatedly runs its diagnostics instead of starting normally.

Luxembourg made most public transport free in 2020, so passengers generally have no need to tap in or out on trains, trams and buses. Charges still apply to First Class and cross-border travel. The terminal is an INIT PROXmobile unit at Rout Bréck / Pafendall station; its tests check the screen’s red, green and blue pixels, brightness and alignment, and the equipment is managed remotely.

  • A Luxembourg station terminal is stuck in a screen-test loop.
  • Most public transport fares have been free since 2020.
  • The remotely managed unit should alert an administrator.

Luxembourg is a small, landlocked country in western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France and Germany. Its capital, Luxembourg City, has a public transport network of trains, trams and buses.

Since 2020, most public transport within Luxembourg has been free to use, so passengers generally do not need to tap a ticket at stations. First Class and journeys across the border still cost money. The terminal at Rout Bréck / Pafendall station is designed to display travel information, and its colourful screen tests appear to be running because of a technical fault.
