Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl performance set for new documentary
Hulu and ESPN are developing a documentary about Michael Jackson’s 1993 Super Bowl XXVII halftime performance, with a release planned for February 2027. The show is regarded as a landmark in televised entertainment, and the film is set to examine how it was created and its influence.
Titled *Spectacle: Michael Jackson at the Super Bowl*, the film will be directed and produced by Bao Nguyen and is expected to include previously unseen footage of Jackson and his team. Jackson performed a medley including “Jam”, “Billie Jean” and “Heal the World”, beginning with a 90-second motionless stand and ending with a choir of more than 3,000 children. John Branca, executor of Jackson’s estate since 2009, is among the producers; the article also notes the continuing controversy over abuse allegations, for which Jackson was acquitted on all counts in 2005.

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of American football, watched by a large television audience in the United States and around the world. Its half-time show has become a major music and entertainment event, giving performers a brief stage during the game.
Michael Jackson was one of the best-known pop performers of the 1980s and 1990s. His 1993 show combined several of his songs with a dramatic opening and a large children’s choir, and is often seen as a turning point in the scale and ambition of Super Bowl half-time performances.
Jackson’s legacy remains contested because of allegations of child sexual abuse, which he denied; he was acquitted of all charges at his 2005 criminal trial. His estate, which manages his legacy and business interests, is involved in the documentary.
