Halo and Destiny co-creator develops AI uprising story with Margaret Stohl

The Verge ·

Jason Jones, co-creator of Halo and Destiny, is developing a story about an AI uprising with author Margaret Stohl through their new company, Stone Kite. The studio plans to build the fictional world across different formats, beginning with comics and prose chapters, then potentially expanding into films and games.

Jones’s original manuscript presents an oral history told by about 100 characters across 40 countries. Stone Kite has 22 staff and more than 250 contributors; it has released the first chapter of a four-part graphic novel, One Zero One, and is publishing a chapter from Jones’s manuscript. Stohl says the excerpt, about an airsoft battle between humans and AI-powered bots, echoes concerns about cheating, bullying and agent-like AI behaviour.

Halo and Destiny are video game series created by teams that included Jason Jones, a game designer and co-founder of Bungie. Margaret Stohl is a novelist whose work includes young adult fiction and comics. Stone Kite is a company they have set up to develop stories and characters across different kinds of media.

Stories about an AI uprising imagine artificial intelligence systems acting against human interests. AI tools are also increasingly able to make decisions and carry out tasks, prompting debate about how they should be controlled and how people might misuse them. That context helps explain why fiction about humans and AI-powered machines can connect to concerns about behaviour, trust and fairness.
