California couple charged after daughter, eight, dies following asthma attack

Daily Mail ·

California prosecutors have charged Gabrielle Hanson and Jacob Randolph with felony child neglect after their eight-year-old daughter, Aurora Williams, died following an asthma attack. Authorities say her breathing difficulties went untreated for more than eight hours in a home with cockroaches, mould, rubbish and animal faeces. Her death was classified as a homicide, and six children from the household were taken into care.

Investigators said Aurora’s inhaler was broken and cockroaches were found in her respiratory mask. Hospital staff had also seen her in February 2025, when she was seriously underweight, hungry and covered by cockroaches; social workers’ records described the children as living in hazardous conditions since 2019. The parents were released under orders barring contact with children, and are due in court on 20 November; a relative who lived with the family faces separate charges related to alleged abuse of a stepchild.

Asthma is a condition that can make the airways narrow and breathing difficult. An inhaler delivers medicine to help ease symptoms, and a severe attack can become life-threatening without prompt treatment.

The case concerns the death of Aurora Williams, aged eight, and the care she received at home. Her parents, Gabrielle Hanson and Jacob Randolph, face felony child neglect charges; prosecutors’ allegations have not yet been tested in court.

Authorities say six other children from the household were taken into care. The case also raises questions about earlier contact with hospital staff and social workers, and what was known about the children’s living conditions.
