Apple HomeView preorders receive modest £10 discount before launch

The Verge ·

Apple’s first smart display, the HomeView, is available to preorder for $289.99 on Amazon, a $10 reduction ahead of its 13 November launch. The early discount is modest, but such deals on new Apple devices before release are unusual.

The HomeView has a seven-inch square touchscreen that can recognise up to six household members and tailor what it shows to each person. It also works as a smart home hub with Matter and Thread support, can connect to HomeKit Secure Video cameras, and includes a 12-megapixel FaceTime camera. Apple says its Siri assistant can use personal context from messages, calendars and emails to help with tasks such as finding keys, following recipes or managing schedules.

  • Apple’s HomeView is $10 off before its 13 November launch.
  • The $289.99 display can personalise content for up to six people.
  • It combines smart home controls, video calls and Siri features.

Smart displays combine a screen and speaker with a voice assistant, letting people check information and control connected devices around the home. Apple’s HomeKit is its system for managing smart home products; Matter and Thread are technologies designed to help compatible devices from different manufacturers connect and communicate.

The HomeView is Apple’s first smart display, joining a market that includes products from companies such as Amazon and Google. Its camera and ability to recognise household members are intended to personalise the experience, while its hub features let it connect with supported lights, cameras and other devices.

The device also reflects Apple’s effort to make Siri more useful by linking it with personal information such as messages and calendars. How well those features work, and how much people value keeping them within Apple’s ecosystem, may shape the product’s appeal.
