Karla Sofía Gascon, Itziar Ituño Set for Political Fantasy Satire ‘When Devils Rule’ from Spain’s Atlantika Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety ·

Karla Sofía Gascón and Itziar Ituño are set to star in “When Devils Rule”, a Spanish supernatural political satire in development. The six-part series follows four working-class women who confront evil figures hiding within society, using fantasy and folklore to explore how powerful people manipulate public life.

Gascón will play Manuela, a teacher at an elite school, while Ituño will portray Evita, secretary to the prime minister of a fictional country. The project draws loosely on Manuel Mujica Lainez’s novel “The Journey of the Seven Demons”; its creators say the contemporary story centres on care, education, healthcare and journalism. About 60% of Spanish production costs are expected to be covered by a Basque regional tax incentive, and the series will be pitched at Tallinn’s TV Beats market in November.

Spanish television often uses folklore and fantasy to explore present-day social and political questions. “When Devils Rule” draws loosely on an Argentine novel about demons, recasting that idea as a story about four working-class women in a fictional country.

Karla Sofía Gascón plays Manuela, a teacher at an elite school, and Itziar Ituño plays Evita, an aide to the country’s prime minister. The creators say the series will focus on care, education, healthcare and journalism, and on how powerful people can shape public life.
