From Mario to machine guns: how Ubisoft Paris made Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactics
Ubisoft Paris is following its Mario + Rabbids games with Rainbow Six Tactics, a turn-based spin-off of the military shooter Rainbow Six Siege. The change in tone is stark, but the studio says Siege’s emphasis on preparation and consequential decisions makes it a natural fit for tactical strategy.
A demonstration showed a four-person squad using drones, explosives and coordinated attacks in a night-time operation in Nigeria. Players can also arrest enemies to gain intelligence points, and missions allow different approaches. The game features 15 operators and follows commander Paul “Big Boy” Bishop as he tries to re-establish Team Rainbow amid a global conflict.

Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six began as a series of tactical military games based on novels by Tom Clancy. Rainbow Six Siege, released in 2015, is a team-based shooter in which players plan operations and use different specialist characters, known as operators.
Ubisoft Paris, the studio behind the Mario + Rabbids strategy games, is adapting Siege into a turn-based game. Players take control of a small squad, with time to plan actions such as using drones, explosives and coordinated attacks; the story centres on commander Paul “Big Boy” Bishop and Team Rainbow.
The shift from a fast-paced shooter to turn-based tactics changes how players act, while drawing on Siege’s focus on preparation and choices. The spin-off also gives the established series a different way to tell stories about its operators and missions.
