‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ VFX Boss Jerome Chen on Hulk’s Redesign, Finishing 445 Shots in a Week

Variety ·

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” required nearly 2,000 visual effects shots to be completed in a 24-week post-production sprint. Supervisor Jerome Chen said the compressed schedule meant 445 shots were delivered in one week, with roughly three-quarters of the work completed during the final six weeks.

Chen described making British locations stand in for New York, including digitally changing street details and adding recognisable features such as water towers and hanging traffic signals. The team also redesigned Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, adjusting his build, hair and colouring, while a late decision shaped the look of a Jean Grey energy wave. Chen said limited time, rather than artists’ ability, often determines how polished effects appear.

Visual effects add or alter images that would be difficult or impractical to film, from changing a location to creating a computer-generated character. A visual effects supervisor coordinates that work, helping artists and filmmakers decide how the finished scenes should look.

Big productions often divide effects work among teams and specialist studios, while editors and filmmakers continue shaping the film. A short post-production schedule can leave many shots to be finished late, making time available a factor in how much detail teams can refine.

The film brings together Spider-Man and the Hulk, a character whose size, appearance and movement are created partly through visual effects. Making British streets resemble New York also involves matching details such as signs and traffic features, so the altered images fit the scenes around them.
