Microsoft reports Windows 11 responsiveness gains, including on 8GB PCs
Microsoft says months of changes have made Windows 11 up to 20 per cent more responsive, as part of a broader effort to improve performance and reliability. The gains matter particularly for people using PCs with limited memory, though the company’s figures describe its own measurements.
Microsoft says improved memory management can keep up to 2GB more active data in memory, while on machines with 8GB of RAM or less, Widgets load only when opened, freeing more than 200MB for other tasks. Other changes include less disruptive updates, a cleaner Widgets section, movable taskbars, faster Windows Hello sign-in and Bluetooth pairing that can be up to 15 seconds quicker. A faster Windows Search is currently available to Windows Insiders and is due to roll out more widely later this year.

Windows 11 is Microsoft’s operating system for personal computers, and its performance depends partly on how a computer’s memory is used. RAM is the short-term working space that apps and system features use while a PC is running; computers with less RAM can have less room for these tasks.
Widgets are small panels that show information such as weather or news, and Windows Hello lets people sign in using methods such as face or fingerprint recognition. Microsoft has also been changing how Windows updates, search and Bluetooth connections work as part of wider efforts to improve the system.
Responsiveness describes how quickly a computer reacts to actions such as opening an app or signing in. Microsoft’s reported figures come from its own measurements, so they describe the company’s assessment of the changes rather than a guarantee that every PC will see the same results.
