E Ink unveils Kaleido 4 with richer colours and sharper text
E Ink has announced Kaleido 4, an update to the colour e-paper technology used in many e-readers and tablets. It aims to make colour images richer and text clearer while retaining the faster refresh rates that have helped Kaleido displays spread across devices.
E Ink says Kaleido 4 doubles colour gamut volume, raises white reflectance by 15 per cent and boosts contrast by 50 per cent. It still displays only 4,096 colours, with colour images at lower resolution than black-and-white text, but refresh rates can reach 18 frames per second. Hanvon’s M10C II tablet will be the first announced device to use it; Amazon and Kobo have not announced products with the new screen.

E Ink makes electronic paper displays, which use very little power and are easier to read in bright light than many conventional screens. Its Kaleido technology adds colour to this type of display, which is used in some e-readers and tablets.
Colour e-paper has limits compared with phone or tablet screens: it shows a small range of colours, and colour images are less detailed than black-and-white text. The technology matters to people who want to read or view colour content on a low-power display, while keeping text clear and page changes relatively quick.
