Lanterns Season 2 Gets Official Update from DC Studios Boss

Polygon ·

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran says a second season of *Lanterns* has not been approved, though he would not be surprised if one is made. He said it would depend on whether HBO, DC and the creative team can develop a worthy follow-up to the first season, leaving the show’s future open.

The first season ended with John Stewart choosing to protect Earth as an independent Green Lantern. Aaron Pierre will reprise the role in next year’s *Man of Tomorrow*, and Safran said the TV series offered room to introduce characters before bringing them into films. DC’s next announced TV project is the 2027 docuseries *The People v. Gorilla Grodd*; its subsequent live-action plans remain undecided.

  • *Lanterns* season 2 has not been greenlit.
  • Safran says a worthy follow-up could lead to more.
  • John Stewart returns in next year’s *Man of Tomorrow*.

Green Lantern is a title held by members of an intergalactic corps who use powerful rings to protect life. In Lanterns, John Stewart is the central Green Lantern, played by Aaron Pierre; the first season ends with him choosing to protect Earth on his own.

DC Studios, led by Peter Safran and James Gunn, oversees a connected slate of films and television for DC characters. Safran has described television as a way to introduce characters who may later appear in films, and Pierre is due to play Stewart again in Man of Tomorrow.

A second season would require agreement between DC, HBO and the creative team on a follow-up to the first. The decision matters for how Stewart’s story continues and whether the series helps shape future DC films; other live-action television plans after the announced 2027 Gorilla Grodd docuseries have not been settled.
