Far Out ·

Salma Hayek says she turned down an offer to play singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in a biopic, which producers made soon after Selena was murdered in 1995. Hayek called the timing distasteful, and her refusal led to a large casting search that helped launch Jennifer Lopez’s career.

Casting calls drew about 10,000 hopefuls in Los Angeles, more than 8,000 in Chicago and an estimated 5,000 in San Antonio, with further auditions in Miami and New York. Rebecca Lee Meza was cast as young Selena, while Lopez played her for most of the 1997 film and received a Golden Globe nomination; Hayek later said Lopez was right for the role.

  • Hayek rejected the role because the offer came soon after Selena’s death.
  • More than 20,000 people auditioned across three major cities.
  • Jennifer Lopez’s performance helped establish her as a leading actor.
