The programme includes 49 feature films and 19 shorts, with 13 titles in competition. Highlights include Egyptian drama *Safe Exit*, Palestinian film *Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep*, and Oscar contenders *Rose* and *Fatherland*; the wider programme features Cannes Palme d’Or winner *Fjord*. El Gouna is a resort town on Egypt’s Red Sea coast, and its film festival is one of several events that bring films from across the Middle East and North Africa to audiences and industry professionals. The region’s autumn festival season also includes events in Cairo, Doha, Marrakech and Carthage.

Film festivals can help filmmakers reach audiences, attract distributors and build attention for films hoping to compete for international awards. El Gouna’s October dates mean its programme can include films first shown at major festivals in Europe and North America, alongside work by regional filmmakers.

The festival presents films from established directors as well as emerging talents, including Egyptian and Palestinian stories. Andrew Mohsen is taking over as artistic director before next year’s 10th edition, giving him a role in shaping the programme’s direction.
