HBO’s ‘Sex and the City’ Replacement Is Your New Netflix Weekend Binge

Collider ·

The Sex Lives of College Girls has been added to Netflix, where its three-season run and mostly resolved ending make it an easy weekend binge. The comedy has been described as a spiritual successor to Sex and the City, carrying themes of women’s friendship, sexuality and self-discovery into a college setting.

The series follows four very different freshmen sharing a suite at fictional Essex College in Vermont: Leighton, Bela, Whitney and Kimberly. Created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble and inspired by their East Coast college experiences, it premiered in 2021 and was cancelled after three seasons despite attempts to find it a new home. Its roughly 30-minute episodes and limited cliffhangers offer a relatively complete story, though its changing cast, including the departure of Reneé Rapp’s Leighton, shifted the group’s dynamic.

  • The college comedy is now streaming on Netflix.
  • It ran for three seasons before cancellation.
  • Four freshmen form the show’s central friendship group.

The Sex Lives of College Girls is a comedy about four first-year students sharing a suite at the fictional Essex College in Vermont. It follows Leighton, Bela, Whitney and Kimberly as they navigate friendship, relationships, sexuality and life away from home.

Created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, the series drew on their experiences of studying on the US East Coast. Its college setting and focus on women’s friendships have led some to compare it with Sex and the City, which explored similar themes among adult friends in New York.

The show ran for three seasons from 2021 and was cancelled after its third season, despite efforts to find it another home. Cast changes, including Reneé Rapp’s departure as Leighton, altered the group’s dynamic as the story progressed.
