Widespread terror as FBI investigates ‘suspicious substances’ mailed to lawmakers and election offices

Daily Mail ·

The FBI and US Postal Service are investigating suspicious letters sent to congressional offices and election officials in several states. The incidents have prompted evacuations and renewed security concerns ahead of November’s midterm elections, when officials are already preparing for heightened threats.

At least one Senate office was targeted. Oklahoma’s election board evacuated its office after receiving an envelope containing white powder, while postal investigators intercepted a similar letter addressed to Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose. Louisiana was also among the states targeted; authorities have not identified the substances or those responsible. Election officials’ associations said contingency plans are in place, and a Princeton analysis found election workers faced more threats and harassment than other groups during the previous two national elections.

The United States holds federal elections every two years, with voters choosing members of Congress and, in presidential years, a president. State and local officials administer elections, including registering voters, preparing ballots and counting results.

The FBI investigates federal crimes, while the US Postal Service handles the mail and its inspectors investigate suspected offences involving postal deliveries. Election offices and congressional offices are separate parts of government, but both may receive official correspondence through the post.

Threats and harassment against election workers have been reported in recent election cycles. Mail containing an unknown substance can prompt evacuations and testing while authorities establish what it is and who sent it.
