‘Fourth Wing’ Finds Its Violet & Xaden: Esther McGregor & Emilio Sakraya To Lead Prime Video Series

Developing story first seen 1 hour ago

Deadline ·

Prime Video has cast Esther McGregor as Violet Sorrengail and Emilio Sakraya as Xaden Riorson in its adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy novel Fourth Wing. The casting sets the leads for a series about two cadets whose relationship develops at a dangerous military college, as they train to become dragon riders.

Violet is pushed by her mother to leave her intended path as a historian and compete for a place among Navarre’s riders; Xaden is a brooding cadet with ties to a rebel group. At Basgiath War College, candidates face the rule “graduate or die”, and riders depend on their dragons to survive. The series was greenlit in May, with Meredith Averill as showrunner and Lisa Joy directing the premiere; the plan is to adapt the five-book Empyrean series across multiple seasons if the show succeeds.

Fourth Wing is a fantasy novel by Rebecca Yarros and the first book in her Empyrean series. It is set in Navarre, where Basgiath War College trains cadets to become dragon riders, a dangerous role in a country that relies on them for defence.

Violet Sorrengail is expected to follow her mother’s orders and compete for a place among the riders, despite having planned to become a historian. At the college she meets Xaden Riorson, a cadet whose family has links to a rebel group, and their relationship develops amid the risks of training and the college’s harsh rules.

The story combines dragon riding, military training and a developing romance. Its adaptation brings the book’s world to television, with the possibility of drawing on the wider five-book series if the show continues.
