American Songwriter ·

The Judds released their debut full-length album, *Why Not Me*, on 15 October 1984. It topped the country chart and helped establish the mother-daughter duo as leading voices for traditional-leaning country music while Nashville labels were favouring a more pop-oriented sound.

The title track reached No. 1 for two weeks and later won major country music awards, including a Grammy for the duo. The album itself spent three weeks at No. 1 in February 1985, and its other singles, “Girls Night Out” and “Love Is Alive”, also topped the chart. The Judds were a mother-and-daughter country music duo: Naomi Judd sang alongside her daughter Wynonna. They emerged in Nashville in the 1980s, when many record labels were leaning towards a smoother, pop-influenced country sound.

Their music drew more heavily on traditional country styles, with close harmonies and acoustic instruments. Their success mattered because it showed that this approach could find a large audience, and helped make the pair prominent figures in country music.
