CD Projekt Red CEO Michał Nowakowski has confirmed that the upcoming live-action Cyberpunk film will tell an original story in the franchise’s world, rather than adapt Cyberpunk 2077’s plot scene by scene. The clarification suggests the film may not focus on V, the game’s protagonist, and gives a clearer sense of the project’s direction.

Paramount Pictures is attached, but details about the cast and most of the crew have not been announced; producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is reportedly involved. CD Projekt Red took a similar approach with the animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which was praised and renewed interest in the game after its troubled launch. A second season is due on 20 October.

  • The film will tell a new story in the Cyberpunk world.
  • It will not retell Cyberpunk 2077’s plot one to one.
  • Paramount is attached; cast details remain limited.

New here? Start with this

Cyberpunk 2077 is a role-playing game set in Night City, a fictional metropolis where powerful corporations, advanced technology and street gangs shape daily life. Players follow V, a mercenary whose choices affect the story.

The game was made by Polish studio CD Projekt Red, which is developing the film with Paramount Pictures. A film set in the same world can introduce different characters and events, so viewers may not need to know V’s story to follow it.

CD Projekt Red has also expanded the game’s world through Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an animated series with its own characters. Its reception showed how a separate story can bring attention back to the game, though a film’s cast and wider creative team have yet to be announced.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

An original story could let the film explore Night City and the wider Cyberpunk universe without being constrained by the game’s branching plot or audience expectations about V. It may also make the film more accessible to newcomers while giving established fans a fresh perspective, as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners did for the franchise.

The case against

A story that leaves the game’s plot and possibly V behind could disappoint viewers who hoped to see the characters and events they know brought to the screen. The game’s choices and personal stakes are central to its appeal, so an original film would need to capture that spirit rather than rely on the setting alone.
