German police detain Russian man over suspected Synnovis hack link
A 28-year-old Russian man accused of being a core member of the Qilin cyber-crime gang has been detained in Germany. German detectives are investigating whether he and his associates were involved in the 2024 Synnovis hack, which disrupted London hospital services and was linked to a patient’s death.
The attack on 3 June disrupted blood testing and transfusion services, led to cancelled operations and diverted emergency patients, and affected more than 10,000 appointments over several weeks. One London NHS trust said a patient died unexpectedly, with a long wait for a blood test among several contributing factors; British police are examining whether their inquiry could lead to an unlawful killing case. Qilin is accused of hacking more than 4,000 organisations since 2024 and extorting over $140m (£105m).
