Consequence ·

Wyclef Jean and Carlos Santana have released “Freedom (Carlos Santana Remix)”, reuniting 27 years after their work on Santana’s hit “Maria Maria”. The remix features Santana’s guitar playing and comes with a music video; its lyrics question what freedom means in the world today.

“Freedom” first appeared on Jean’s album *Clef Notes – Quantum Leap, Vol. 1*, the opening instalment of a planned seven-album project. Jean co-wrote and co-produced “Maria Maria” for Santana’s 1999 album *Supernatural*; the song spent 10 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2000 and won a Grammy. Its guitar melody was later sampled in DJ Khaled’s 2017 hit “Wild Thoughts”, featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.
