Liam Gallagher doesn’t get the Fontaines DC hype: “They don’t have any tunes”
Liam Gallagher has dismissed Fontaines DC’s music, saying they are “not good enough” to open for Oasis because they “don’t have any tunes”. The comment came on X as the Irish band released their new album, renewing a public exchange between the musicians.
The tension dates to 2024, when Fontaines DC members Carlos O’Connell and Conor Deegan criticised the nostalgia surrounding Oasis’s reunion; frontman Grian Chatten later said he loved Oasis and that the remarks did not represent his view. Oasis’s Live ’25 shows instead featured acts including Cast, Richard Ashcroft and Cage The Elephant on different legs. Gallagher had also insulted Fontaines DC in 2024.
- Gallagher says Fontaines DC “don’t have any tunes”.
- His remark followed a fan’s question about Oasis support acts.
- The bands’ public friction began around Oasis’s 2024 reunion.
Both sides, in good faith
The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.
The case for
A reasonable case for Gallagher’s view is that opening for Oasis calls for songs and a live presence that can connect with a very large, varied crowd, and he is entitled to judge whether Fontaines DC’s music fits that role. His blunt comment may reflect a genuine difference in musical taste and a preference for acts whose material he thinks is more immediately memorable.
The case against
A reasonable case against his view is that Fontaines DC’s songs have earned a substantial audience and critical following, so dismissing them as having no tunes overlooks a different, less conventional approach to songwriting. Their members’ earlier comments about Oasis’s reunion also do not necessarily define the band’s music or make them unsuitable as an opening act.
