On This Day in 1982, a Dolly Parton Classic Became the First Song to Top the Country Charts Twice

American Songwriter ·

On 16 October 1982, Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” returned to No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, making it the first song to top the chart twice. The achievement came from two separate recordings by Parton, showing the song’s lasting appeal.

Parton first reached No. 1 with the song in 1974, after writing it while trying to leave her musical partnership with Porter Wagoner. She recorded a new version for the 1982 soundtrack of *The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas*, released as a single in July; it reached the top just over three months later. Parton recorded it again as a duet with Vince Gill in 1995, which peaked at No. 15 and won them a CMA Award.
