Kal Penn’s Busy Onscreen Year Includes Playing Anna Nicole Smith’s Doctor, A Gregg Araki Role & ‘Harold & Kumar 4’ In Works: “One Of The Funniest Scripts”
Kal Penn is returning to leading roles after years of combining acting with political work. His latest film, *Trust Me, I’m a Doctor*, casts him as Dr Sandeep Kapoor, Anna Nicole Smith’s physician, and recounts their professional relationship and brief friendship. Penn says he was drawn to Kapoor’s insecurity and vulnerability, while acknowledging the film may not appeal to everyone and that Smith’s death should not be treated lightly.
The film is based on Kapoor’s 2017 memoir and includes a parade scene filmed during West Hollywood Pride in 2024 to recreate the 2005 event. Kapoor was reviewed by California’s medical board over prescribing methadone to Smith under a pseudonym while she was pregnant, but was acquitted on all legal counts related to her death and continued practising. Penn also confirmed he and John Cho have signed on for a fourth *Harold & Kumar* film; its script is finished, though no further production details were given.
