Half a Scaramucci: White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia Ousted After One Briefing

The Hollywood Reporter ·

Katie Zacharia has left her role as White House press secretary less than a week after taking it, following scrutiny over how she described her legal qualifications. Her departure came hours after Donald Trump suggested she reconsider the job, saying she had been treated badly by the media.

Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University’s law school but confirmed she took the California bar exam and did not pass. After being asked where she had passed the exam, she replied, “When I moved to China”; she later said she had never presented herself as an attorney at law. Trump said the White House was discussing another role for her, while former press secretary Anthony Scaramucci joked that records were made to be broken.

  • Katie Zacharia is out as White House press secretary after less than a week.
  • Questions about her legal credentials drew scrutiny.
  • Trump said she may take another White House role.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The White House can reasonably argue that a press secretary must communicate with precision, especially about qualifications that bear on credibility. If Zacharia’s answer left reporters or the public with a misleading impression, scrutiny was appropriate, and her rapid departure may have been a way to restore confidence in the role.

The case against

Zacharia can reasonably argue that she did not claim to be a practising lawyer: she graduated from law school, disclosed that she had not passed the California bar, and later clarified her remarks. Given that Trump said she had been treated badly by the media and was considering another role for her, her departure after intense scrutiny could be seen as a disproportionate response to an ambiguous exchange.
