Ubuntu 26.10 launches with a provisional kernel and experimental dictation tool
Ubuntu 26.10, codenamed “Stonking Stingray”, has been released on schedule with Linux kernel 7.3, which is still a release candidate. Canonical plans to update it to the finished kernel when available. The release also brings Myna, an experimental speech-to-text tool, giving Ubuntu users a new way to dictate text.
Myna worked best in testing with a USB headset, while the laptop’s built-in microphone produced poor accuracy; it also does not recognise punctuation or voice commands. Installing it downloads nearly a gigabyte of extra files, and on a non-GPU system it ran slowly. The release includes GNOME 51 and updated Ubuntu flavours, including Kubuntu with Plasma 6.7.5; Fedora 45, by contrast, was delayed by about a week.
- Ubuntu 26.10 ships with pre-release Linux kernel 7.3.
- Myna adds experimental speech-to-text, with limitations in accuracy and commands.
- Ubuntu flavours are updated, while Fedora 45 is delayed.
