Born 78 Years Ago Today in Florida, Don Henley’s First Keyboardist Who Conducted “Hotel California” and Helped Define 70s Country Rock
Jim Ed Norman, born in Florida on 16 October 1948, built a career spanning performance, arranging, record production and music-industry leadership. His early friendship with Don Henley led him to join Henley’s band Felicity, and later to arrange strings for the Eagles, including on *Hotel California*, helping shape the sound of 1970s country rock.
Norman studied music at North Texas State University before leaving to join Felicity, which became Shiloh and moved to Los Angeles. Beyond the Eagles, he arranged for Linda Ronstadt, America and Bob Seger, and produced several successful Anne Murray albums. He joined Warner Bros. Nashville in 1983, became president the next year, and expanded the label’s reach while working with artists including Randy Travis, Faith Hill and Blake Shelton.
