Tesla targets 2028 Roadster production after years of delays

Engadget ·

Tesla has again promised that its redesigned Roadster will enter production, this time in 2028, alongside a dramatic demonstration using a ramp and rocket boosters. The announcement has renewed interest in the electric sports car, but its long history of missed deadlines makes the latest target uncertain.

First unveiled in 2017 for a planned 2020 release, the second-generation Roadster has since been delayed repeatedly, with Tesla still taking reservations of up to $250,000. The original Roadster, launched in 2008 in limited numbers, helped establish Tesla’s early reputation; the new version is presented as a high-performance successor, including a “Thrust” trim with cold-gas thrusters.

  • Tesla now targets Roadster production in 2028.
  • The redesigned car was first announced in 2017.
