Why Caitríona Balfe Initially Said No to ‘Sense and Sensibility’

Collider ·

Caitríona Balfe initially turned down a role in the 2026 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s *Sense and Sensibility* because, after eight seasons on *Outlander*, she wanted a break from period dramas. She reconsidered after learning that Georgia Oakley, whose film *Blue Jean* she admired, would direct; Oakley’s clear artistic vision persuaded Balfe to join the project.

Balfe plays Mrs Dashwood and said she wanted to make the character her own rather than be influenced by earlier adaptations, including the acclaimed 1995 film. She drew on the script’s emphasis on Mrs Dashwood’s optimism, seeing her as a free-spirited, benevolent mother rather than a frivolous figure. Oakley’s film is her second feature, based on a screenplay by Diana Reid.
