The 1992 ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch Chevy Chase called “the worst thing I’d ever seen”
Chevy Chase said Adam Sandler’s “Opera Man” sketch was “the worst thing I’d ever seen”, criticising its place in a news programme. His reaction reflects disagreement over the sketch’s absurd musical humour and the direction of Saturday Night Live.
The character debuted during Weekend Update on 18 April 1992, with Sandler wearing a wig and tuxedo to sing high-pitched songs about current events. Despite mixed reactions, Opera Man became a recurring character during Sandler’s time on the show and returned when he hosted in 2019. Chase made the comments in 2010; he had hosted SNL eight times and last presented an episode in 1997.
