Why your Wi-Fi speeds can drop in the evening, and what to do about it

Engadget ·

Evening Wi-Fi slowdowns often happen because many people nearby go online at the same time, creating congestion. The shared capacity of cable networks can become strained, while nearby routers also compete for the same wireless frequencies, making streaming, gaming and video calls less reliable.

The article suggests restarting the modem and router, then connecting data-heavy devices to the 5GHz or 6GHz band where available. Keep 2.4GHz for smart home devices that need range, and schedule software updates, large downloads and cloud syncing for quieter hours. Fibre connections generally have more capacity than cable, but local Wi-Fi interference can still affect performance.

  • Restart equipment and use 5GHz or 6GHz for demanding devices.
  • Schedule large downloads and updates for quieter hours.
