Is Slough House Real? The True Story Behind Apple TV’s Spy Thriller ‘Slow Horses’

Collider ·

Slough House is fictional, but Apple TV’s *Slow Horses* draws on real aspects of intelligence work to make its spy stories feel convincing. The series follows MI5 agents who have been sidelined after mistakes or poor performance, and its blend of office drudgery, humour and high-stakes investigations has earned 20 Emmy nominations and three wins since 2022.

Writer Mick Herron created Slough House for his novels, beginning with the first book in 2010; the series has grown to 15 books, including 2025’s *Clown Town*, and sold more than four million copies. MI5 is real, and the show’s cases echo work such as counter-terrorism, protecting government officials and countering foreign state threats, while also reflecting the routine paperwork and interviews that make up much of spy work.
