Mathew Horne’s pompous Malvolio anchors dreamlike Twelfth Night at Sheffield Crucible
Mathew Horne gives Malvolio a stiff, self-satisfied air in a new production of Shakespeare’s *Twelfth Night* at Sheffield’s Crucible. His humiliation in yellow stockings lands as broad comedy, while the production’s folk music and dream-like atmosphere add uncertainty to the romantic mix-ups.
Directed by Jamie Glover, the fast-moving show features a live score by Genevieve Dawson on clarinet, guitar and violin, with David Birrell’s Feste bringing a troubadour’s warmth. Bebe Sanders plays Viola, whose disguise as Cesario entangles her with Olivia, played by Justina Kehinde; the production runs until 31 October.
