‘The Rookie’ Is Officially Fixing the Show’s Biggest Problem

Collider ·

The Rookie is adding a new middle-aged trainee officer in Season 9, a move that could bring the ABC series closer to its original focus on reinvention and starting over. Troian Bellisario will play Stephanie “Stevie” Monroe, a divorced single mother of two who joins the Mid-Wilshire Division and may connect with John Nolan’s own experience as a later-in-life rookie.

Since its 2018 debut, the show has shifted towards an ensemble police procedural as Nolan advanced to become a training officer. Most new rookies have been younger and without children; the only comparable older recruit, Larry Macer, left after accidentally setting off his gun on his first day. Bellisario, 40, is known for Pretty Little Liars and previously played a training officer in On Call.

  • Troian Bellisario joins The Rookie as a new recruit.
  • Her character is a divorced mother of two starting over.
  • The role may return the series to its original premise.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

Adding a middle-aged trainee with family responsibilities could bring the series back to its original theme of starting over later in life. Stevie’s perspective may also broaden the rookie cohort and give Nolan a meaningful parallel as the show’s ensemble has grown.

The case against

A new character alone may not address what some viewers see as the show’s drift from its original focus, especially if Stevie’s story is quickly absorbed into the existing procedural ensemble. Making her another older rookie could also repeat Nolan’s arc rather than offer a distinct perspective, so the change may not resolve the perceived problem.
