Gold Coast butcher’s free weekly barbecue halted over permit requirements

Daily Mail ·

A free weekly sausage sizzle run by Gold Coast butcher Maaki Tyson has been stopped after a council inspector said it required permits for the barbecue, roadside dining and table. Tyson says the event helps local people and that the inspector’s manner upset customers; the dispute has prompted public support and criticism of the council.

The event at Lakeside Quality Meats in Palm Beach costs about A$35,000 a year, and Tyson says he was told to expect a fine of up to A$1,600. He says the council had previously warned him about signs but had not raised concerns about the barbecue or seating. The City of Gold Coast said officers attended the business on 17 October and would work with it to ensure future events meet health and safety requirements.

  • Council stopped a butcher’s free weekly sausage sizzle.
  • He may face a fine of up to A$1,600.
  • The council says it will work with the business on compliance.

Both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

The council can reasonably argue that permits and safety rules protect customers and passers-by, especially when food is served and tables or roadside space are used. Applying those requirements consistently helps manage risks and clarify what businesses must do, while the council says it will work with the butcher on future events.

The case against

Tyson and his supporters can argue that a free weekly barbecue provides practical community support, and that stopping it over permit requirements may be disproportionate if the council had not previously raised those concerns. They may also see the enforcement as unfairly abrupt, particularly given the event’s cost and the reported upset caused to customers.
