Funding gap will cut WFP food support in Gaza by a third
The World Food Programme says funding shortages will force it to reduce food assistance in Gaza, even as many families struggle to meet basic needs and winter approaches. The cuts reflect a shortfall in resources, rather than a fall in need or lack of access, the agency says.
The number of people receiving WFP help will fall by about a third, from 1.6 million to 1.1 million. Daily hot meals will drop from 250,000 to 150,000, and flour and ration-box support will fall from 1.1 million to 600,000 people a month; the WFP says it needs $450m over six months to maintain critical operations. Nearly all of Gaza’s 2.1 million residents are displaced, two-thirds rely on food aid, and more than 80% are unemployed.
- WFP aid will reach 500,000 fewer people in Gaza.
- Daily hot meals will fall by 100,000.
- The agency says it needs $450m for six months of operations.
