Sarina Wiegman signs contract extension to stay as England women head coach until 2029
Sarina Wiegman has extended her contract as England women’s head coach until 2029, keeping her in charge through that year’s European Championship. The deal gives the Lionesses the chance to pursue a third consecutive European title under her leadership and provides continuity after her existing contract was due to end following next summer’s World Cup.
Wiegman has led England since September 2021, winning two major tournaments and reaching the finals of her past five major competitions, including two World Cups as runner-up. Her immediate focus is helping England qualify for the World Cup in Brazil through a two-leg play-off against Ukraine; the extension also leaves open the possibility of coaching Team GB at the 2028 Olympics if the team qualifies. Her assistants Janneke Bijl, Arvid Smit and Darren Ward will stay with her.
- Wiegman will lead England through Euro 2029.
- England could pursue a third successive European title.
- Her immediate focus is World Cup qualification.
