LSU student and firefighter fiance, 21, both killed after being struck by ‘impaired’ driver, 20, cops say
LSU senior Leah Victoria Fonte and her fiancé, volunteer firefighter Shane David Hirstius, both 21, died after a car struck them as they walked along a road in Baton Rouge early on Sunday. Police say the driver was impaired and that the deaths followed a night when the couple had been celebrating a friend’s birthday.
Investigators say Mia Camille Dawson, 20, was driving south on Nicholson Drive when her vehicle veered off the road and hit the couple on the right shoulder. Fonte died at the scene; Hirstius later died in hospital. Police say Dawson left the scene and was found nearby; she faces charges including operating while impaired, hit-and-run driving and vehicular homicide. The crash remains under investigation.
