Uber dodges £340M cabbie lawsuit after drivers miss legal deadline

The Register ·

Uber has defeated a £340 million lawsuit brought by thousands of London black cab drivers and two former private hire firms, after a High Court judge ruled the claims were filed outside the six-year legal time limit. The case concerned allegations that Uber misled Transport for London to obtain permission to operate in London, but the ruling did not decide whether the allegations were true.

Around 13,000 cabbies sought nearly £200 million for lost earnings, while Kabbee and Iride claimed a further £140 million. Justice Simon Birt found that information available by early 2018 was sufficient to bring a claim; proceedings began in 2024, after the deadline had passed. Uber denies the allegations, which relate to its arrival in London in 2012 and claims about how its booking system worked.
