Inquest jury to assess care before Bournemouth student’s meningitis death

Daily Mail ·

An inquest jury will examine whether the death of 18-year-old Bournemouth University student Megan Draper from meningitis was preventable. The coroner said a jury must hear the case because meningitis is a notifiable disease, and the inquiry will review her contact with NHS 111 and the treatment she received at two hospitals.

Draper died on 29 October 2025, five weeks into her physiotherapy course, after contracting meningitis B. Her parents say she was sent home from Royal Bournemouth Hospital twice despite worsening symptoms, including a headache, stomach pain and spreading rash; she later deteriorated on the journey home and was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol. Her parents also say they did not know the MenACWY vaccine she received at 14 did not protect against MenB. The inquest has a provisional start date of 19 July 2027.
