Aussies warned over popular cobweb Halloween decorations sold at Kmart, Coles and Woolworths
The RSPCA has urged Australians to keep artificial cobweb decorations indoors because loose fibres and netting can trap or injure wildlife. The warning is especially relevant in Australia, where Halloween falls in spring, when many native animals are active.
The decorations, sold by retailers including Woolworths, Kmart and Coles, can entangle birds, flying foxes, insects and small mammals, or obstruct animals near trees and waterways. Woolworths advises customers to use them indoors; Coles says it will review its seasonal range. Marion Council in Adelaide can fine residents $300 for cobwebs left on public footpaths, trees or fencing, and the RSPCA advises people to contact trained wildlife rescuers if an animal is caught.
- Keep fake cobwebs indoors to protect wildlife.
- Spring activity increases risks for Australian animals.
- Marion Council can issue $300 fines in public areas.
