Coroner suggests banning sales of tumble dryer which had fault that caused fatal house fire that killed father, 38, and his nine-year-old daughter
A coroner has urged an urgent safety review and suggested suspending sales of a Hoover tumble dryer model after a likely fault in one of the machines started a fire that killed a father and his nine-year-old daughter. He warned that without further investigation, similar risks could lead to more deaths.
An inquest found it was more likely than not that a DX C10DCER-80 Hoover condenser dryer caused the fire in Heckmondwike on 8 June 2025. The father, Sohaib Ahmed, and his daughter Manahal died from inhaling fire gases; Manahal’s sister survived after extensive hospital treatment. The precise electrical failure could not be identified because experts said the dryer may burn almost completely once a fire takes hold. The coroner said up to 1.6 million Hoover and Candy dryers may share relevant characteristics and called for root-cause analysis.
