Oura adds Cardio Effort and automatic VO2 Max to its rings

The Verge ·

Oura has added Cardio Effort and automatic VO2 Max to its smart rings, aiming to help users understand how exercise affects their cardiovascular health over time. Cardio Effort assesses workout intensity and duration against a personal baseline, and can indicate when recovery may be more useful than increasing effort.

Both features are available on the Oura Ring Gen 3 and later for members. Cardio Effort rates weekly activity from Light to Reaching; automatic VO2 Max is a beta feature in Oura Labs that activates after five qualifying GPS-enabled walks, runs or hikes, replacing the previous six-minute walking calibration test.

  • Oura adds two cardiovascular tracking features to Ring Gen 3 and later.
  • Cardio Effort compares weekly workout strain with a personal baseline.
  • Automatic VO2 Max starts after five qualifying GPS activities.

Oura makes smart rings that collect health and activity data, which members can view through its app. The company has added exercise measures that use this data to help people track activity and changes in fitness over time.

Cardio Effort compares the intensity and duration of workouts with a person’s usual activity. VO2 Max is an estimate of how efficiently the body uses oxygen during exercise, and is commonly used as an indicator of cardiovascular fitness. These measures offer context for exercise and recovery, but they are estimates rather than a medical diagnosis.
