How did Jeff Beck and Stevie Wonder first meet?
Jeff Beck and Stevie Wonder first met backstage at a concert at Detroit’s Cobo Arena on 7 May 1972, where the Jeff Beck Group and Wonder shared the bill with Free. Their brief conversation led to a studio partnership that helped produce “Superstition”, one of the era’s biggest hits.
Wonder later said Beck asked to record “Maybe Your Baby”, and he jokingly promised to write him an even better song. At Electric Lady Studios, Wonder began building a track from drums, clavinet and Moog bass; it became “Superstition”. Beck was meant to record and release it first in exchange for playing on Wonder’s album Talking Book, but Motown urged Wonder to keep it. Wonder’s version came out in October 1972, reached number one in the US and later went triple-platinum in the UK.
